MAINTENANCE TREATMENTS

BACK PAIN

Back pain is common and can vary from the most acute agonising pain with horrible, often frightening pain shooting down your leg(s), to the more of a niggle when sat in a position for too long. There can be many different reasons for back pain, this may include age related changes, disc degeneration, nerve pain, muscular spasm, muscle weakness, joint stiffness, lumbar instability, poor alignment. I will help you make sense of your problem so that you understand what you can do, the natural history of the injury and how to maximise your potential. I may use soft tissue muscle techniques, joint mobility mobilisations, ,manipulation muscle stretches, pilates based exercises, strength and conditioning exercises, advice on activity modification and positioning or onward referral privately to specialist consultants or your GP.

KNEE PAIN

Knee pain is bothersome, it may be acute and traumatic- due to a slip, trip or fall or perhaps a tackle from an opponent. Or it may have developed after a block of training on the bike or running, or perhaps you only notice (and hear it) when you go up or down the stairs. I will help you understand the issue and we will set realistic expectations which might involve joint mobilisations of the foot, ankle and hip, muscle stretches and massage, strengthening, foam rolling advice or a change in load (activity modification). If the injury exceeds my expected time frame for improvement, we will discuss the next stage which may include onward referral to GP, private Sports Medicine consultant Dr Mike Rossiter or private orthopaedic consultant.

SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulders are said to be 'emotional' joints- we move them a lot and they are well represented in the brain. Rotator cuff injuries spans the ages, from young gym goers lifting too much or too frequently in the gym, to older individuals with tendons that are less resilient causing pain. Frozen shoulders are acutely painful and some of the most painful and debilitating problems we can see as physios- that is why a quick diagnosis is required to direct management and improve outcomes. Treatment will be based on your function and current pain levels and exercises are tailored and specific to each individual. We can tailor your rehab to the gym or home, wherever you prefer.

RUNNERS

Running is an easy access exercise, meaning that with a set of trainers on you are good to go! However, running also puts you at a greater chance of injury- some evidence says the risk of injury in a year is as high as 80%. I enjoy treating runners, we will problem solve and assess for strength and mobility deficits and look for possible training errors and spike in load.

CYCLING

Road riders, cross-country riders, cycle-cross riders, BMX'ers, leisure riders- you all spend time in the saddle, but possibly at different durations and at different body postures. A spike in training load, or too much wattage output on the indoor trainer may have strained muscles. Bike set-up may cause discomfort in the hands, neck or lumbar region of the spine. Foot position (cleats) can lead to knee pain. Poor lower limb alignment can lead to ankle, knee and hip pain.

POST OPERATIVE REHAB

You may have elected to have a joint arthroplasty (replacement) or had an unfortunate accident requiring surgery. Hip, knee, shoulder replacements, ACL tears, knee/ ankle ligament tears, post fracture, whiplash all require a thorough assessment to check for joint mobility and strength and expert rehabilitation to get you moving efficiently. If you have a suspected ACL tear, I would recommend undergoing my vigorous pre-op and post op ACL protocol rehabilitation.

Common Injury Treatment List

If you have an acute sports injury, you will require immediate intervention to reduce the impact of injury on your body and surrounding tissues- this enables you to recover quicker. The treatments, according to how “chronic” (old) and “acute” (new) your injury is, may initially involve the POLICE regime and early strengthening and protected mobilisation advice.

Chronic injuries (those that have been around a while) that are not healing on there own require a different approach. Everyday work positions/ training regimes may be aggravating the problem or it could be something you’re not doing- i.e. specific strengthening. Aggravations could be repetitive strain at work, poor posture, altered biomechanics, poor footwear or bad training habits to name a few.

Back on Track will target your injury at each healing stage with specific exercise/stretching/manual therapy and electrotherapy interventions to help speed your recovery from injury and prevent from reoccurrence.
