WHAT IS SPORTS THERAPY?
Similar to Physiotherapy, Sports Therapists can undertake a 3yr degree program. However, as Sports Therapy is not regulated with the Health Professions Council, you can call yourself a Sports Therapist if you have only done a weekend course- so it is important that you do your research and find the level of expertise you are happy with. In the 3 year degree program, education is concerned with concentrating on sports injury and the physiology of training. Emphasis is placed upon assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. Sports Therapy is yet to be regulated by the Health Professions Council.
Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of patients back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. It utilises the principles of many different health professions whilst incorporating the idea of sport and exercise sciences to prepare the participant for training, competition and when applicable, work.
